Hope Springs Eternal

It had been a long, long day.  Student social issues overtook the focus of well-planned lessons and it was with great effort that we got anything accomplished.  So I went home right after school instead of spending the usual hour or two working in the classroom.  I needed a break.  The sun was shining bright in a cloudless blue sky.  It felt glorious to be outside, so I walked a bit when I got home, making the most of this gift of time and weather.

I’m not sure what made me do it or what I was expecting to find, but I casually moved some brown wet leaves aside in my front garden.  That single swipe of my foot revealed daffodil sprouts pushing through the earth reaching for the sunshine.  Eureka!  It might seem silly, but I became truly excited and filled with anticipation of spring and good things to come.  Out of the chaos of wet leaves and dirt, came hope.  Tomorrow is another day that holds promises of being better than the day before.  Let’s hope the same holds true for my classroom!

    I truly understand how challenging it can be when the social neediness of students overrides the curriculum…Sometimes…I redefine “curriculum” when I am in that situation and decide that social skill building is the curriculum that they need currently.

  2. Daffodils are my favorite, favorite flower. A couple of days ago, I was walking my dog and saw some that were already blooming in someone’s yard! Such a happy sign of hope! And today will be better!


  3. Love this post. We all have those days, and I think we especially all have those days as teachers. It is always the most wonderful to have a positive reminder that there is hope out there, and that things are on the up and up!
